Crack length matters, but so do location, age, contamination, edge involvement and the overall condition of the windshield. Photos give me a first look. I check the windshield in person before I start.
Full crack repair and Crack Arrest are different services. Crack Arrest stops spreading and leaves the crack visible. Full crack repair fills the crack with resin.
Can a crack bigger than a dollar bill be repaired?
Yes. You’ve probably heard that if a crack is longer than a dollar bill, about six inches, you need a new windshield. But six inches is not the technical limit.
The 2007 ANSI/ROLAGS committee included representatives from Safelite and Ultra Bond. Current ROLAGS guidance allows single-line cracks through 14 inches within its repairability criteria.
Here’s the part that stops me in my tracks. Ultra Bond’s published repair data found that only 10% of the cracks they repaired were 3 to 6 inches long. The other 90% were longer than six inches.
Think about what that means. If everything over a dollar bill is automatically called too long, then about 9 out of 10 cracks get pushed out of the repair conversation.
A crack longer than a dollar bill doesn’t automatically mean replacement. At Mint Chips, I repair cracks up to 10 inches.

When a chip becomes a crack
Did the Crack Start at a Rock Chip?
Many windshield cracks begin at a rock chip. Sometimes an unrepaired chip starts running; sometimes a previously repaired rock chip cracks out later. Either way, a crack beginning at an old chip or repair does not automatically mean the windshield must be replaced.
If your windshield cracked after chip repair, I’ll look at the damage as it is now. Depending on its length, location, edge involvement, contamination, and previous work, I may still be able to stop the crack or structurally repair the windshield instead of replacing it.
