When a repaired chip starts cracking

Did Your Rock Chip Repair Turn Into a Crack?

You paid to save the windshield. Now the crack is longer.

A failed chip repair doesn’t always mean a failed windshield.

Start with what happened

I may still be able to stop the crack from spreading.

A chip can sometimes crack during or after a repair. That does not automatically mean the windshield has to be replaced.

The crack may begin at the old impact point, extend from the edge of the previous repair, or grow later after a temperature change, vibration, or ordinary driving. That describes the condition of the glass; it does not assume who or what caused it.

I look at the crack length, location, edge involvement, depth, contamination, previous work, and the windshield’s overall condition before recommending the next step.

A repair-first option

Stop the crack before it travels farther.

Crack Arrest is my $75 service for stopping a windshield crack from continuing across the glass. The crack stays visible. The goal is to stop it from getting worse.

Crack Arrest and full crack repair are different services. Full crack repair fills an eligible crack with resin. Crack Arrest is a limited propagation-control service for eligible damage when stopping movement is the goal.

What happens next

The right service depends on the crack you have now.

The crack is starting at the old chip

Send a close photo of the previous repair and a wider photo showing the full crack. I can usually tell whether an in-person repair assessment makes sense.

The crack keeps getting longer

A spreading crack can change quickly. Avoid abrupt heating or cooling of the glass and let me see the current length, direction, and location.

You want to keep the factory windshield

If the damage is repairable, keeping the original glass also keeps the factory seal and existing camera mounting relationship in place.

The damage needs replacement

Some cracks should not be repaired. If the condition of the windshield makes replacement the responsible answer, I’ll tell you directly.

Questions drivers actually ask

Failed chip repair and spreading-crack questions.

Why did my windshield crack after a chip repair?

A chip can sometimes crack during or after repair. Temperature changes, vibration, stress in the glass, the original break, contamination, age, location, and previous work can all affect what happens next. Photos and an in-person inspection are the best way to judge the damage.

Can a failed windshield chip repair still be repaired?

Sometimes. A previous repair does not automatically rule out another repair-first option. The crack length, location, edge involvement, contamination, depth, and overall windshield condition determine what may be appropriate.

Can you stop a rock chip crack from spreading?

Mint Chips offers Crack Arrest for eligible damage. Its goal is to stop continued spreading. The crack remains visible, and the windshield must be evaluated before work begins.

Will Crack Arrest make the crack disappear?

No. Crack Arrest is not a cosmetic repair. The crack stays visible; the goal is to stop it from getting worse.

Do I have to replace the windshield if my chip repair cracked out?

Not automatically. If your windshield cracked after chip repair, some damage does need replacement, but a crack that began at a previous repair deserves a direct repair-first assessment before the original windshield is removed.
