Keep the buses at the yard

Repair windshield damage before it becomes a scheduling problem.

I come to school districts, contractors and transportation yards throughout the Twin Cities service area. Blue Bird, Thomas Built Buses and IC Bus use different windshield shapes and configurations across their model lines, so I evaluate the actual glass and the complete break on each unit.

Minnesota school and Head Start buses receive annual State Patrol inspections, and the State Patrol may also conduct random inspections. The current School Bus Inspection Manual identifies a driver visibility area and limited exceptions for small, separated windshield damage. Damage outside those allowances can still be a defect, and all defects identified during a passed inspection must be repaired within 14 days.

A repair decision is not an inspection decision. I can evaluate whether glass damage is structurally repairable; the State Patrol applies the current manual and determines compliance. For borderline damage, confirm the current inspection requirement before scheduling repair.

Minnesota inspection context

Visibility and current criteria come first.

Minnesota law requires approved safety glass in school bus windshields. The January 2026 inspection manual requires AS-1 windshield markings and restricts damage in the defined driver visibility area, with narrow exceptions for a crack no longer than three-quarter inch or a damaged area coverable by a three-quarter-inch disc when the listed separation conditions are met.

Those are inspection criteria—not Mint Chips repair limits. A repaired crack can still fall in a location where the bus operator should confirm regulatory acceptance.

One bus or several

Group damaged units at the yard so multiple windshields can be handled in one stop.

Up to 10 inches

I repair windshield cracks up to 10 inches. Minnesota inspection requirements still apply.

Different glass layouts

Single-, two- and three-piece windshield arrangements are evaluated by panel and damage location.

Fleet workflow

Identify the units, photograph the damage, keep the buses on-site.

Send the bus numbers, yard location and a close and wide photo for each damaged windshield. I will review the damage and schedule the on-site repair visit. Fleet pricing is separate from retail pricing; multiple vehicles and repeat service cost less per vehicle.

For broader commercial scheduling, see fleet windshield repair. For repair limits and methods, see chip repair, crack repair and Crack Arrest.

School bus fleet questions

Frequently asked questions.

Do you repair windshields on school buses?

Yes. Mint Chips provides on-site chip and crack repair for school bus operators in the Twin Cities service area.

Can you repair several buses in one visit?

Yes. Keep the buses at your yard and tell me which units need attention. Multiple-bus and repeat-service pricing is separate from retail pricing.

Do you work on Blue Bird, Thomas Built Buses and IC Bus windshields?

Yes. Those manufacturers use different windshield shapes and configurations across models, including multi-piece designs. I inspect the damage in the glass that is actually on the bus.

Will a windshield repair guarantee a Minnesota inspection pass?

No. The Minnesota State Patrol applies the current School Bus Inspection Manual and makes the inspection decision. Windshield repair and regulatory acceptance are separate questions.

How long a crack can Mint Chips repair?

I repair windshield cracks up to 10 inches. On a school bus, the damage location, visibility area, edge involvement and current inspection criteria all matter.
